A grand tourer on the motorway, fast over a pass
OUR VIEW
On the motorway it is exactly the grand tourer it looks like, as the torquey 4.7 V8 and long gearing make big days easy. On a mountain pass you will live in second and third, and the V8 pulls hard enough to make that work.
It rolls and leans a little, although once you learn it you will trust it as a fast car that handles. The Sportshift gearbox is no PDK, and its deliberate, slightly old-school shifts suit the character of the car.
Our ratings use one scale shared by every car we list.
Engagement ★★★★☆
The rear transaxle gives it real balance and feedback, and the V8 sounds the way an Aston should.
Ownership ★★★☆☆
Keep an OBD2 reader in the glovebox for the odd electronic fault, watch the clutch and budget for its thirst.
Usability ★★★★☆
It is a roomy two-seater with a decent boot, as happy on the daily commute as on a week-long road trip.
Touring ★★★★★
Once in sixth, the V8's torque does all the work and long motorway stages pass with very little effort.
HISTORY
Swiss-delivered, with full service history
The V8 Vantage arrived in 2005 as Aston Martin's smallest car, built in Gaydon on the bonded aluminium VH platform, and in 2008 the V8 grew to 4.7 litres. The Roadster added an electric fabric roof and nothing else you would notice from the driver's seat.
This car was delivered new in Switzerland in July 2009 and has had two long-term owners since. Both used it properly, and the service book shows it. A carVertical report is on file, and at 136,000 km the mechanicals feel tight.
